TatecDESMA9 Week 1

Hi My name is Tate Curran, I am from Redondo Beach California. I am a political Science major here at the University Of California Los Angeles.  This course has become relevant to my academic path because I have been pursuing so many political science classes, I thought it might be enjoyable to take a step back and find a class that I might enjoy taking.  Art has never been a topic that I have pursued in life, however I am often Intrigued by the intricacies it contains.  As for the scientific and technological aspirations toward this course, it still contains a scientific element to it, just like political science.  Technologically the online dynamic of this course is very unique and less stressful on the mind and body to not have to worry about attending class at a specific time on camps.  In week one we are talking a lot about "Two Cultures." C.P. Snow was one of the main writers and authors of this theory.  He was a man who talked much about science and government.

Snow wrote about two cultures and he was generally talking about the rich and the poor.  are UCLA there will always be two cultures.  In fact their are many hundreds of cultures that are on campus. The way C.P. described it, there are plenty of students and faculty at UCLA that are not as well off as many others are.  These two cultures are extremely different and very important for us as students to see, understand and study.  Snow says "The main issue is that the people in the industrialized countries are getting richer, and the people in the non-industrialized countries are at best standing still:" (Snow, 43). "

"Few literary phrases have had as enduring an afterlife as “the two cultures,” coined by C. P. Snow to describe what he saw as a dangerous schism between science and literary life. " (New York Times)

"Snow was both a scientist and a novelist and saw himself as a bridge uniting the cultures, but he worried that for others, they were drawing apart" (CP Snow).

In these quotes and examples, there is an incredible amount of respect and acknowledgment for C.P. Snow.  He was a great and famous writer about tis difficult topic. He really changes our minds about many situations in our lives.  As I go on living my life I will refer to C.P. Snow and his readings to help myself be better and for the people around me.
